Unrestricted Funds

Donations of all sizes on which the donor places no restrictions are the most essential for ensuring the Foundation's ability to meet the community's present and future needs.

These funds are typically created by visionary philanthropists with broad charitable interest.  They offer current, and future, board of The Foundation maximum flexibility to respond to changing needs of the community, emergencies and to support the creation of innovative responses to community problems.

These funds are placed one of the Foundation’s Unrestricted Funds:

Scranton Area Foundation Unrestricted Fund

This fund is the general endowment fund of the Foundation.  These are funds donated to the Foundation with no restriction placed on their use by the donor.  The Board of Governors makes the decisions about grants from these funds.

Monsignor Andrew Joseph McGowan Fund

A very generous gift from the trust of Monsignor Andrew Joseph McGowan was given to the Scranton Area Foundation.  We established an unrestricted fund in memory of and in tribute to our dear friend, Monsignor McGowan, whose life’s work and legacies of love continue to create positive change in lives of the people of our community.

 

Donors who create one of our other types of funds during their lifetimes can, if they choose, specify their named fund to become unrestricted after their deaths.
