These grants come from contributions provided to the Foundation's "General" Endowment Fund and are used for a variety of purposes. The Foundation provides grants from our General Endowment Funds to many different organizations, such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of NEPA, United Way of Lackawanna County, The Commonwealth Medical College to name just a few.
Blakely Borough Scholarship Association Fund Established 1990 This fund provides an annual scholarship for an outstanding graduating student from Blakely to be used for college expenses. It was established by the Blakely Borough Scholarship Association.
Margaret Briggs Leadership Lackawanna Scholarship Fund In 1995, the Margaret Briggs Foundation established this fund to provide annual tuition assistance to an individual from the social services field to participate in the Leadership Lackawanna Program.
Anna E. Durkin Memorial Fund Established 1997 Mr. & Mrs. William R. Lynett established this Donor Advised Fund in memory of their loyal and devoted family friend, Anna Durkin. The Lynett family will be advisors on grants from this fund.
Ben Franklin Trust Fund Established 1993 In his will, dated July 17, 1788, Benjamin Franklin left Philadelphia 1,000 pounds sterling—about $4,000 – making provisions to ensure its “purposefulness” indefinitely.
On the 200th anniversary of his death, a portion of the trust became permanent endowments with community foundations across Pennsylvania. The Franklin Trust of the Scranton Area Foundation is a Field of Interest Fund for education. The earnings help to enrich the lives of those in the greater Lackawanna county area, ensuring the spirit of Mr. Franklin’s benevolence is kept alive.
Sarah Marie Heard Fund Established 1994 Mr. & Mrs. William C. Heard established this fund in memory of their beloved daughter, Sarah Marie. This Field of Interest Fund provides grants for programs and services for children.
Paul and Anne Marie Kelly Memorial Scholarship Fund Established 1993 Paul V. Kelly and his children established a scholarship fund in memory of Anne Marie Kelly, their beloved wife and mother. A college scholarship will be awarded each year to a graduating senior from North Pocono High School who participated in the youth activities of St. Catherine’s parish. The family added Paul’s name in his memory in 2004.
Koppelman/Dinner Fund Established 1997 This Donor Advised Fund was established when the Theodore Koppleman Foundation transferred its assets to the Scranton Area Foundation creating the Koppleman/Dinner Fund. The Dinner family advises on grants from this fund.
Richard and Sally Marquardt Education Fund Established 1996 Richard and Sally Marquardt established this fund to provide grants to the scholarship endowment funds of college level educational institutions in Lackawanna County.
The Molly Fund Established 1994 Mr. & Mrs. William J. Calpin, Jr., with their family and friends, established the Molly Fund to memorialize and celebrate the life of Molly Elizabeth Calpin. This fund provides assistance to children facing catastrophic illness, and their families.
Jennifer Morgan Scholarship Fund Established 1997 The family of Jennifer Morgan established a scholarship fund in her memory to be awarded annually to a graduating senior of Pittston Area High School who will pursue a degree in the field of education.
Roseann Smith Alperin Memorial/Junior League of Scranton Fund Established 1996 The Junior League of Scranton established the Roseann Smith Alperin Fund to honor the memory and community spirit of their fellow League member. This award is presented annually to a woman who demonstrates the vision of a leader and the capacity to inspire and motivate others.
Jane H. Rushmore Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund Established 1995 Dr. Richard C. Rushmore and his family established this nursing scholarship in memory of his wife, Jane H. Rushmore. A scholarship will be awarded annually to a student in the practical nursing program at Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County.
Sarah Beth Beynon Memorial Scholarship Fund Established 1994 Established by the family and friends of Sarah Beth Beynon to honor her memory by creating scholarships for cancer cure research and studies in environmental science.
Thomas G. Gallagher, Jr. United Way of Lackawanna County Operational Endowment Fund Established 1996 This fund was established to assist the United Way in meeting its operational expenses, particularly those incurred for the charitable or educational purposes of the United Way.

Margaretta Belin Chamberlin Award Fund Established 1992 The children of Margaretta Belin Chamberlin established this fund to honor the memory of their mother. An award may be presented annually to a woman whose vision, dedication and courage has enhanced the quality of life and expanded the opportunities for the people within her community.
Joseph J. Costa Memorial Scholarship Fund Established 1993 Lawrence F. and James J. Costa established a fund in their father’s memory. The award is presented annually to a student or students at Lackawanna College who demonstrate a high level of academic achievement and citizenship.
Frank T. Dolbear Memorial Fund Established 1990 This fund was established with the Foundation, by the Abington Heights School District to honor the memory of a respected and loved former superintendent of schools. This Fund provides opportunities for training to enhance the professionalism of AHSD faculty.
Easter Seals Society of The Northeastern Counties Endowment Established 1989 to support the charitable and educational purposes of the Easter Seals Society/ Goodwill Industries.
Wallace E. Gordon Memorial Fund Established 1988 Harry M. Gordon established a memorial fund for his son, Wallace E. Gordon. This fund benefits the Community Concerts Association in which Wallace had a great interest.
Joseph P. McDonald Memorial Fund Established 1986 The family of the former principal of Dunmore High School established this fund, to honor his memory. It provides two scholarships each year to graduating seniors from Dunmore High School.
Karen O’Connell Welles Memorial Scholarship Established 1984 This fund was established in memory of Karen O’Connell Welles to provide scholarships for participants in Leadership Lackawanna. The Award is given to an individual based on potential for leadership, need and interest in promoting equality.
Karen O’Connell Welles Music Fund Established 1992 A music education fund created for the Lucan Center in memory of Karen O’Connell Welles by Karen’s family and friends and supports music and music education through the Scranton Cultural Center and other community organizations which provide literary or educational opportunities, particularly in music and music education.
Leadership Lackawanna Established 1986 Leadership Lackawanna established this fund to support its mission for leadership development in Lackawanna County.
Margaretta Belin Chamberlin Fund Established 1991 by the Lucan Center in memory of Margaretta Belin Chamberlin, the fund supports Arts in Education for youth, now thru the Scranton Cultural Center.
Philip Salsburg Memorial Fund Established 1984 Established by the United Way in memory of a well-respected citizen of the area and provides opportunities for training in the essential skills required of nonprofit staff people and volunteers.
Dr. Bernard Shair Memorial Scholarship Fund Established 1988 Mrs. Bernard Shair established a memorial fund for her late, beloved husband, who was a community leader for many years. The fund provides a scholarship for a student who has graduated from the University of Scranton and is attending dental school.
United Way of Lackawanna County Endowment Fund Established 1984 by the United Way as a fund to support the charitable and educational purposes of the United Way of Lackawanna County.
Voluntary Action Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania Fund Established 1986 by The Voluntary Action Center as a fund to support the charitable and educational purposes of the VAC.
YMCA of Scranton Endowment Fund Established 1987 This fund was established by the YMCA as a fund to advance the mission of the Young Men’s Christian Association.
