Existing Scranton Area Foundation Funds

Donor Advised Funds / Grants

Donor-Advised funds are funds whereby the donor may recommend to the Foundation, grants to be made from the fund.   The income of the fund is to be distributed each year consistent with the exempt purposes of the Foundation.

Donor Designated Funds / Grants

Donor-designated funds are funds whereby the donor specifically designates a recipient organization or a specific purpose for which the fund has been created.

Field of interest Funds / Grants

This fund allows you to support a particular broad charitable cause, such as education, the arts, health, youth or the disabled, etc. Scranton Area Foundation provides grants from our Field of Interest Funds to organizations like the United Way, Easter Seals, and the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute Funds. These funds are used to public facilities and services such as libraries, YMCAs, and literacy programs.

General Endowment Funds

These grants come from contributions provided to the Foundation's "General" Endowment Fund. The Foundation provides grants from our General Endowment Funds to many different organizations, such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of NEPA, United Way of Lackawanna County, The Commonwealth Medical College to name just a few. These grants are used for a variety of purposes.

Organizational Endowment Funds / Grants

This type of fund is established when a non-profit organization agrees to transfer all, or part, of its endowment to a designated fund within The Foundation. These funds come from organizations like the United Way, Easter Seals, and the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute. The Scranton Area Foundation provides grants from our Organizational Endowment Funds to benefit public facilities and services such as libraries, YMCAs, and literacy programs.

Scholarships

Scranton Area Foundation provides scholarships to students of the region. Scholarship qualifications vary; some scholarships are have broad requirements, while others scholarships are designed to benefit a particular educational institution or field of study. An advisory committee defines the guidelines for candidate selection and award use.

Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts Program & Project Grants

PPA (Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts) is a partnership between local organizations and the PCA (Pennsylvania Council on the Arts). As the Lackawanna and Luzerne County PPA Partner, Scranton Area Foundation administers many PPA grants throughout the region.

Named Endowment Funds / Grants

Donors can establish a Named Fund in their name, in a family’s name, or in the name of any person or organization they wish to honor. Grants distributed from a donor’s fund are awarded in the name of their fund. This person or organization will always be remembered and linked to good works in our community.

Named Memorial Endowment Funds

This is a donor designated fund which is established in memory of someone named by the donor of the fund. These funds can be used for any purpose, including scholarships, grants to benefit a local charity, historical preservation, and more.

Our Grants

The Scranton Area Foundation responds to community needs and opportunities with grants in such diverse fields as health, education, arts, environment, human services, and civic affairs. We are able to do so through the generosity of individuals, organizations, and corporations.

Scranton Area Foundation provides numerous types of grants from both both Non-Endowment Funds, as well as Endowment Funds.
