Focus on a Fund: The Hope for Hunter Fund

The Scranton Area Community Foundation is delighted to be administering the Hope for Hunter Fund, which was created by Hunter when she was just 17 years old and her mother, Maria. The Hope for Hunter Fund was selected as one of the Foundation’s featured funds for 2016 and Hunter will be honored at the Annual Community Celebration on December 8th for her shining example of what The Future of Philanthropy looks like. Please read on for more information about the Fund and the work Hunter is doing through this Fund.

Hunter’s story began in October 2015 when she was diagnosed with Stage IIIC colon cancer and a Level III malignant brain tumor at the age of seventeen. She underwent two major surgeries in November and began intense radiation and chemotherapy in December of that year. Today, Hunter is cancer free and she is living and loving every minute of her life. In addition to creating the Hope for Hunter Fund, Hunter is active in several community organizations that make our region a better place to live.

Throughout her journey, Hunter says she felt blessed with the most amazing family, friends, physicians and medical staff who not only took care of her medically, but showed her such kindness, support and generosity. She created the Hope for Hunter Fund as a way to give back and say thank you to her community. Hope for Hunter provides Chemo Cozy jackets to pediatric and young adult oncology patients receiving chemotherapy at the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital and the Geisinger Medical Center. The jacket has access points disguised as pockets where infusions can be administered without the patient having to disrobe. A patient wearing one can stay warm during infusion therapy and the jacket looks and feels great.

To raise funds to support her work, Hunter is hosting an event on November 13th at Bartolai Winery in Harding from 12-5pm. Tickets to attend the event will be $15 and include a buffet style dinner and live entertainment provided by Facing the Giants, Dave Williams, and Bill Hoffman.
